Updo hair styles

Women.... Who made 'em?  God must have been a... genius.  Their hair.  They say that the hair is everything, you know?  Have you ever buried your nose in a mountain of curls, and just wanted to go to sleep forever?  ~Bo Goldman, "The Start of an Education," made popular by the movie Scent of a Woman.

A beautiful hair styled to mach your face shape brings more beauty to your look. Click here to check what is your face shape. Your hair doesn’t have to be short for a nice hair style. Even the longest hairs can be styled to neck length with updos. If it is long, then you have the benefit to style it in more different ways.

Hair style is the final tip-off whether or not a woman really knows herself.  ~Hubert de Givenchy, Vogue, July 1985. So, here are some casual and formal updo hair styles. Check which one is perfect for yours.

Although I love to style my hair but since I am no expert in hair styling , I took these information and images from http://www.beautyriot.com.

Oval faces

"This is the ideal face shape and can wear any look flawlessly," says Heather Packer, senior stylist at Cutler/Redken Salons. So really, you can wear any updo you'd like and it'll look fab. Why not try one of Packer's favorites, the French Twist, which Jessica Lowndes is showing off here? Packer shares how to do it:

1. Start by back combing your hair, concentrating on the crown and center back of your head.
2. Sweep all of your hair back with your hands and create the twist up the center of the back securing with bobby pins.
3. Once secured, pull out pieces around your hairline and throughout the updo for a more casual undone feel. For a more formal and polished look, use hairspray to smooth the updo.

Worst updo hairstyles
OK, so oval faces are basically perfect (lucky), so there really aren't any bad updos you can wear. That said, our motto is "step away from the scrunchie;" we hope you agree.

round faces

"Round face shapes look great with fringe and softness around the face. For a casual look, your best bet is a half updo with volume at the crown, leaving softness around the face," Packer says. "For a more formal updo, pull everything back into a chignon shape, making sure to maintain the fullness at the crown and soft, face-framing fringe." To create Rose Byrne's look:

1. Work in volumizing spray, like Suave Professionals Volumizing Root Lifter Spray Gel, $2.99 and set your hair with hot rollers.
2. Once the rollers are cool, remove them and back comb your hair at the crown.
3. Sweep back your hair and pin, leaving your bangs and a few face-framing pieces out.

No offense to Nicole Richie, but Packer says that this super-tight, slicked back bun is just about the worst look for round face shapes, since it emphasizes the roundness.

square faces

For square faces, you'll want to show off your strong jaw line with an updo that's cleanly pulled back from your face, Packer says. So you can try a ponytail that's level with your eye line or a pulled back bun like Jennifer Lopez's. For a dramatic nighttime look, follow Packer's tips:

1. Add in a defining or texturizing cream and roughly blow dry your hair.
2. Tease it a bit for additional volume and texture and pull it back into a ponytail.
3. Add a ponytail hair extension for a really dramatic look.

Packer says the worst updo for square face shapes is one that has too much hair around your jaw line. Looks like Sydney Morton's will end up making your square jaw look larger than it is, rather than show off your amazing angular face

heart-shaped faces

For heart-shaped faces, try "a swept back chignon placed from the nape of the neck to the high crown with volume on top," Packer says. "For a more casual look, allow pieces to fall out of the shape, softly framing the face. For a more formal look, make sure that all of the hair is cleanly swept back." Here's how you can get Hayden Panettiere's volumized updo:

1. Set your hair with a curling iron or hot rollers (be sure to spritz a heat protectant spray like Cutler Protectant Treatment Spray, $21 to protect hair from damage).
2. Back comb on the crown and sweep back into desired chignon.
3. Let a few pieces of hair out to frame your face and finish with hairspray.

Flat hair is not your friend if you have a heart-shaped face. Packer says slicked back and flat buns like Mandy Moore's are the worst kind of updo for you.

oblong faces

Packer says that you want to minimize volume on the top of your head and add volume along the sides to even out your long face. For a casual updo, try taking strands of hair near your temples and pull them back into a half updo, leaving the rest of your hair down and wavy. Or you can try Amanda Seyfried's look -- she has minimal volume on top and the sections out of her ponytail add width to her face. Here's how to get the look:

1. If you hair is naturally wavy, let it air dry. If not, place damp hair in several braids and let it dry so you get loose waves.
2. Pull your hair back into a very loose ponytail and secure with an elastic. Leave face-framing pieces out.
3. Use your fingers to separate the hair just above your ponytail, then pull the ends of your ponytail through the opening to create that flipped-in look that she has.
4. Use your fingers to loosen up your ponytail even more for a messier look.

Since your face is already long, the worst updo you can do is one with lots of volume on top and sleek sides, Packer says. That will make your face look even narrower and longer.

diamond faces

Diamond faces have smaller foreheads, so Packer suggests getting heavy, full bangs straight across your forehead (or getting some clip on bangs if you don't want to full-on commit) to add width. Pair your bangs with a ponytail like Jennifer Hudson or for a more formal affair try a neat ballerina bun to show off your killer cheekbones. If you do go for clip on bangs, here's how to use them:

1. Apply a smoothing product like Cutler Fly Away Stick, $23 to minimize frizz and flyaways.
2. After pulling your hair back into a ponytail or bun, clip in the bang piece. Make sure you find a pair that matches your hair color exactly so they don't look fake.

If you have a diamond face, then you'll want to have some fun with your hair. Packer says the worst updos you can wear are ones that are "flat, parted down the middle." Translation: the boring-ish ones.

triangle faces

"You want to create the illusion of width and height in the forehead area and minimize the width throughout the jaw," Packer says. In order to make your triangle face shape look its best, try a side-swept bang and soft wisps of hair around your jawline. When it comes to updos, Packer recommends a faux bob, here's how to get it:

1. Work in a curl cream like Garnier Fructis Soft Curl Cream, $4.49 and set all of your hair with hot rollers, leaving the fringe out.
2. Back comb your roots all over, and pull all of your hair back into a very loose ponytail.
3. Tuck and pin the remaining tail underneath and very softly arrange the hair into a bob shape. Pull pieces of hair out of the shape and around your face to create softness.

So you might be noticing a pattern by now. It's no big surprise, but tight, slicked-back updos are not flattering for your (or most people's) face shape. So unless you're fresh from the pool and are doing it out of necessity, try a softer look.
